E4 and Sky Atlantic

The E4 advert is more humourous, this is probably refelcting what the institution is like.Telling audiences that they are a fun and entertaining institution. The sky atlantic advert is more serious this could be because of the genre and intended audience of the channels. If the adverts were made to show the genres of the shows then E4 would have a serious looking advert like sky atlantic because of the show 'revenge' which is quite a 'serious' show.Similar to the ones on Sky atlantic.these adverst are refelecting wht the institution is like.Sky atlantic if for adults varying from older 20's and early 30's and continuing onto 40's.This would be the most likely age range for this channel as there are some old actors who were big in their time in shows featured on this channel, such as Kevin bacon and Dennis quaid.People in their 30's would recongise them and watch it for them because of personal identity.Sky atlantic has a serious tone to it.The diagetic sound is from a character in one of the shows which says a few lines that kind of sums up all the shows about a hero with a flaw. This is generalised to the shows that are being shown in this advert. The E4 channel begins with a more humorous diagetic sound which is the cartoon character Cleaveland saying 'Cue the music!'.Which then leads to happy up beat music and funny shots from the different shows that are featured on the channel. The Sky atlantic channel has constant quotes from each show that makes up the advert and introduces the different shows.Whereas E4 only has a few humorous quotes from the different shows and a over voice introducing the different shows featured on the channel. The way the shows are presented in the adverts on E4 with a lot of humour and bright colours suggests that it would be for teens and people in their early 20's.

BBC 3 IDENT

BBC three station ident
This particular ident is very colouful which gives the impression that it is a fun channel. Most likely to be for families due to the vibrant colours hinting towards all ages including children. This is because children and young teens are attracted to vibrant colours. The 'three' looks as though it is a multi coloured straw wrapped around a tree branch.Children like straws more than you would think, and the fact that they used a straw like thing is a very clever way of attracting younger audiences. The other thing that hints out that this may be a channel inteneded all age audiences is that they have also used headphones in a clever way.Having them wrapped around the branch like the stems of the flowers is very creative.Above the 'three' you have the original BBC logo to define exactly what channel this is because the ident is very different from the other channels. The little human characters that are hanging from the strings almost represent a family because we have all shapes, sizes and ages. This may also hint towards the type of audience the channel is intended for.The birds are trying to catch the humans as though they are worms.Looking at the background you can see mountains, the whole situation would make you think that this is fantasy tale.Which could hint out the kind of movies and shows this channel plays. This reflects the institution as a fun and creative institution.Bursting with life and new ideas because of how creative and colourful this ident is.The fact that this channel actually has shows like eastenders and torchwood would suggest that it is directed at teens and people in early 30's.

Section A. Toyota Corolla ad

Media forms
Techniques used in the start of the advert are long shot to show the setting of the scene or advert. Shows it is in a home environment. No non diegetic sound as this creates a more realistic environment as there are only background noises and dialogue from the characters. The cat whimpering as to say its hurt to the owner and the owner replies with ‘’come on’ ’Shows us the relationship between the characters as well. Close up shots used on the characters as well to show their facial expressions and for the audience to recognise the characters. New shot that shows the car that is being advertised. Long shot used here to show the environment and the sophisticated neighbourhood. The non- diegetic sound then begins with a slow guitar, this is used to set the mood. To make it out as if the cat has fallen in love with the new car. This is because a point of view shot is used to imitate the cat gazing at the different components of the car. This shot is useful to audiences as it shows clearly what the vehicle consists of, the types of gadgets it has and how it would look if you were to sit inside of it. It gives all audiences a chance to almost experience sitting in the car. There is another close up on the face of the cat to show us the facial expression of it. At the same time the cat is purring, cats usually purr when they are comfortable, they like something or are enjoying themselves. This confirms for us that the cat has fallen in love with the car. There are various shots shown of the cat looking at the car, then looking at something that can cause an injury and then the final step of the process the cat being taken into the car. During this a close up is frequently used on the cats facial expression. Although we cannot see much of an expression we can guess that he is determined to find a way into the car again. Point of view shots used to show the cat looking at the car then the danger it is about to throw itself into. This lets us know exactly what is happening, and how the cat manages to get itself into the car. This helps reveal the story to the audience. Long shots frequently used to show how the cat gets itself into the accident, e.g. when the cat jumps off the wall onto the ferocious looking dog. Near the end of the advert the music becomes faster and upbeat, almost to say it has reached the main part where something dramatic or devastating is about to happen. Builds suspense to the audiences about what is about to happen to the cat now.
Media audiences
The advert would suggest to the audiences that the vehicle has a very satisfactory quality finish that even animals such as cats would injure themselves to take a ride in the car. The uses of shots and slow point of view shots that let us gaze of the components would make people who drive cars think about whether they like or dislike the components. It would save time for car buyers as they already know what the inside looks like now so instead of going out to a shop and sitting in the vehicle for a long time studying the components in more detail the audiences have a rough idea of what the cars aesthetics are inside. The advert would attract people who drive or are looking to buy cars. Social class of A,B and C as this car seems as though it may be expensive due to the famous brand name Toyota and the components. As well as bearing in mind that if you own a car you have to be able to spend a lot of money on it paying the road tax etc. Both genders would be targeted although a woman is shown frequently driving the car. The advert also has user and gratifications of entertainment and information for audiences. Entertainment because it is quite amusing the way the cat throws itself into so much danger that it ends up taking its own life just to be able to sit in the car. Information as this is done by the point of view shots giving information to audiences on what the car consists of inside.
Media Representations
The car in this advert is represented as something to die for. This is shown through the cat’s weird behaviour and intentions of injuring itself constantly just to have a ride in the new car. This clearly gives the impression to audiences that when you sit in the car once you will want to constantly sit in it. The high key lighting of the advert creates a positive and happy atmosphere which also helps audiences see the car in a positive light, whereas if there was low lighting you would not really find the car as attractive as you usually would. The unique colour of the car also makes audiences think there is something different about this car as it separates the car from all other cars that you see every day. The cat purring in the car also pushes the idea of the car being to die for. The cat is purring because it is comfortable which tells audiences what the car is like inside instead of viewers having to imagine what the car would feel like inside. The advert is also called ‘feels good inside’ which also explains why the cat purrs inside the car and risks its own life so much. This exaggerates in a humorous way for audiences how amazing this car is.
Media institutions
The company of the car Toyota would be shown as an institution that creates cars to die for. It shows high production values this is because the advert has probably used animatronic puppets in some parts of the advert for the cat, because you cannot have a real cat jump into all that danger. There is also use of CGI at the end of the advert for when the cat pushes its paw out of the dirt. The use of these things shows that the company would have spent a lot more money on the advert than a regular company would to make the cat look more realistic. This car makes the institution look as though they are the experts of car making, lets us know that professionals are handling the making of these cars so they would be up to standards. The institution is also selling a high social class lifestyle to audiences it is almost saying to the audience if you purchase this car then you will have a fancy lifestyle. This is because of the atmosphere and environment; we are shown long shots of the car, and every one of these long shots show a nice presentable background.

Question for changes in broadcast

Question: How have the technological changes that have occurred on this platform over the last ten to twenty year affected audiences views about this platform and changed the way in which they consume products from this platform? Outline what you think the future of this platform will look like- include a comparision with the other two platforms.

Audiences believe that the changes that have created revolutions to visual effects on the broadcast platforms, are likely to keep improving and thrilling audiences.Changes such as the technology used in James camerons Avatar has revolutionised visual effects. There is now a new way of having very realistic creatures and objects on screen rather than things that you can tell have been made using CGI just by looking at them. Majority of films today look more realistic which means that audiences have familiarized themselves with movies that look realistic rather than movies where you can tell they have obviously been computer generated. The fact that film makers create movies and scenes that are so realistic audiences would expect to see that all the time now. That is one of the things a movie is judged on aswell.Visual effects now mean so much to people.Audiences would probably even want to see improvements in some areas of the technology used on some scenes/objects this would be because audiences would be use to film makers and industries constantly coming out with new ways to make the whole experience of watching a movie better. If audiences were to watch a movie now that had visual effects the way ray harry hausen movies do, then they would be more than disappointed. Most likely everyone would be, even film critics so film makers also need to keep up with everyone to make sure they produce something that pleases audiences and satisfies critics and creates profit.Audiences are excited to notice whether the effects have worked well enough and hidden the fact that the actual object/scene they were looking at was not really shot but is in actual fact computer generated, in short fake.
I know that visual effects do mean alot and have to be up to standards because movies are nominated for the best visual effects aswell as production companies dedicating alot of time to producing one character or object such as the tiger from the film 'Life of Pi'.This is purely to impress audiences and thrill them.A movie without the magic of CGI would not be worth watching.

Broadcast Changes

There have been many changes in techonology on the platform of broadcast. Some have made drastic changes to the industries such as IMAX cameras and HD cameras. These cameras are new and are more frequently used during filming of movies now. This is because almost every movie released in the last two years has been released in IMAX aswell. Now that IMAX is seen around more frequently it is becoming the ''trend'' and something that can create more profit as it allows audiences to experience the movie in a whole new light.IMAX increases the visual look of the scene and the sound system. The increase of HD and the fact that it is more entertaining rather than watching the movie without the 3D features.
The HD cameras bring more vibrant colours to the pictures, this links in with the HD tv's.To increase the vibrant colours and increase entertainment of audiences. It excites audiences when something new that would change the way they can consume broadcast is released. These changes are usually made to movies to make the whole experience of the movie more real. The more real it is the more chance there is of them getting more amounts of audiences consuming their products.CGI and speacial effects have been trying to improve over the years to make something look more realistic, because watching something that has not got features that look real will ruin the experience for people watching the movie. If i was watching a movie that did not have effects that made everything look realistic and as though it is actually there then i wouldnt carry on watching it.As it has ruined the experience for me.

George Lucas' Industrial light and magic company is one of the most well known companies for CGI today.it has been around for 35years making the best visual effects movies. The visual effects looked very real in the movie Jumanji which was released in 1995, not forgetting the Lion that is seen in a few clips was also made using CGI. Industrial Light & Magic created the first computer generated photo-realistic hair and fur for the digital lion and monkeys in Jumanji. This movie also featured a stampede scene with dozens of elephants, rhinos, zebras and pelicans, all computer generated. They also used a costume of the lion on some parts to make it look more real this is known as Animatronics.
New GPU (graphics processing unit) Computers coming into effects, it is making CGI far easier to do, with less skill.

More and more ways to make visual effects seem more real and vibrant are being discovered. The last biggest revolution of effects that i can remember is the way the movie Avatar was made. The characters were not made from scratch on computers. But were aided with the help of the actors and actresses outlines, muscles and facial expressions.Thats how the Avatars seemed very real because they used humans and computers. The use of humans brings out the correct proportions, expresions, movements etc. The computers were used to design their looks but it is their acting. They put the actors in suits so they cold create a skeleton of them on the computers to help them in the making of the movie.

Cine kodak was one of the first 16mm cameras, this was also used by the famous Ray harryhausen, who is known to be the visual effects creator. He created movies that featured mythical creatures such as dinosaurs and old tales such as Hercules. He actually created little models of the creatures and filmed then using a technique called "split-screen" (rear projection on overlapping miniature screens) to insert dinosaurs and other creatures into real-world backgrounds. The result was one of the most influential sci-fi films of the 1950s.The way the creatures were put into the movie was without creating it on a computer which meant that these types of creatures had more texture to them and more of a realistic look to them. When they were seen on screen at the same time with humans, you could tell more that it was fake but never the less the creature itself looked more real. There was then the blue screen and green screen.Green screen is more frequently used, a computer is used to put an image on everything that is green. That is how someone is made invisible in movies such as Harry potter when he uses the invisiblity cloak, he is hidden by the green screen material. If a character wears clothing of the same type of green that can also be pixelated into something.

The avengers made most o ftheir surroundings using blue and green screen. So some shots were actually just computer generated environments rather than real life areas. The palce where the final battle takes place was all made up using a blue and green screen. The broken floor with rubble, taxis and little explosions were the only real things in that scene.CGI today can fool people easily.

The technology behind animatronics has become more advanced over the years, making the puppets even more realistic and lifelike.Animatronics is used in situations where a creature does not exist. The puppet is covered with body shells and flexible skins made of hard and soft plastic materials. It is then finished by adding details like colors, hair and feathers and other components to make the figure more realistic.
Animatronics are used in Jurassic park that is why the dinosaurs look so realistic and lifelike.
Actress Ariana richards said ''The fact that the movie is still visually impressive certainly helps. In another interview, special effects artist Dennis Muren said, “I always thought when we did [Jurassic Park] that within five or 10 years it was going to look old-fashioned and obsolete, but it doesn’t.That is one reason as to why it was so successful and is still rememberd.because it looks so real, it has the ability to thrill new and old audiences.

User Generated Content for my case study

21JumpStreet
User generated content on Twitter for movies in my case study. For 21 Jump Street there are two accounts for 21JumpStreet quotes. One unnofficial movie account which was made before the release of the movie, so that fan must have been really dedicated and anticipated for the movie to come out they decided  to promote it a little and create a buzz around it on twitter gathering 420 followers.
Numerous Facebook pages have been created for the movie by fans who constantly post pictures of shots from the movie, along with quotes from that scene in the picture or just a random quote from a part of the movie. There are also alot of Tumblr pages dedicated to 21 Jump Street, with images and gifs of scenes from the movie aswell as pictures of the main lead title actors in their career over the years.A fan would do this for a movie because they are a fan of the actors featured in the movie therefore the U&G is personal identity.Through somewhat obsessing with a character/actor you will begin to learn a lot more about them building your personal identity.

500 Days Of Summer

This movie also has a few Twitter pages such as a quotes page and a official page. There are also various accounts of people who have named their accounts as 500 days of summer. This would be from watching and having a positive opinion on the movie. There are alot of Facebook pages made for this movie, either just to say they like the movie or to post numerous quotes from the movie and other post pictures for the movie.Alot of Tumblr pages with gifs and images from the movie aswella s quotes. Some fanart included.

Paul
It is difficult to find user generated content for this movie as it only appears on Facebook as Paul the movie. It has numerous pages which constantly post pictures and shots from the movie with quotes from the movie. When searching on twitter for any user generated content to do with this movie, i couldnt find anything for it.Also couldnt find any pages that were made for it before its release the way i found an account on twitter made before the release for 21Jump Street. There are also a few Tumblr pages dedicated to the move, they consist of gifs and images from the movie along with quotes.

500 Days of summer teaser poster

This poster uses the same elements that have been used in the previous poster some of these elements have been used in the trailers. we see alot of synergy within the products of the three platforms already, emedia, print and broadcast. They use the same style of presentation continuously, the colours are used in most products. The light blue and white is seen frequently throughout products on all platforms. The way the characters are presented using square and rectangle photographic looking shots of the main characters. In this poster we have the photographic looking pictures here again but with both charactes in most of the shots. This is because it is a teaser trailer and they are introducing the main chatracters of the movie to the audiences because if it only consisted of Zooey deschanel in the shots then people would assume that she is the only character who plays the lead role title, but this teaser poster defines for the audience that Joseph Gordon Levitt is one of the characters who takes a lead role in the movie aswell.

This poster has the main important writing in light blue, which makes it stand out and fit in with the colour scheme going on in this poster.the light blue also stands out more on a white background which is his T-shirt.The light colours would have been used within the platforms as it links with the movie title of summer.White and light blue do connect to teh sumemry mood and theme. The first sentence we see is a review which seems to be a very positive review. The poster would need a review and star rating like that as it would help draw in audiences and as some people would not be able to tell the genre of the movie. The review quote makes it clear that is a romance movie. The fact that it says it is ''The coolest romantic comedy of the year!'', will definatley draw in audiences who enjoy watching romance movies, to see whether this movie lives up to its quote.

A few of the picture shots used on the teaser poster have been used on all three platforms which again creates synergy a connection between products. The fact that we always have Joseph Gordon Levitt on the outside of the picture shots as well as within them would help audiences realise that he would be one of the main characters within the movie and the one who is probably the most love struck because he seems to be always gazing at the pictures. He keeps them as a memory throughout their relationship or the movie.

The techniques used to compress a persons life into 60 seconds are things such as creating the ad to look like one whole shot, where when the camera slides to the left and the right showing different ages it seems as though it has all been shot at once. The situations shown in every age shot is fast and not slow.It is straight to the point of what is happening as when she walks into the door after her first kiss she is in a white wedding dress and the man is dressed smartly in a suit.We understand it is her wedding as she is the one holding the bouqet. The use of showing situations in life that have an impact on someone aswell as casual days is what sums up someones life. You have those really speacial moments you will remember forever but then you have those tiring days you want to sleep away. The tiring day is seen when it seems as though the woman has come back from work and everyone is sitting on the sofa.Moments that have an impact on someone and change peoples lives are things such as starting a family having kids, watching your kids grow up and have kids of their own.Thats what shows life is really moving forward everything is changing. The long shots are used to make the audience absorb the atmosphere in faster rather than closeups which would take time on expressions and focusing on once thing. That is why long and mid shots are used as the story is moving pretty fast.

Brand values
John lewis has everything you need and for any occassion. This is because it shows all the stages throughout her life, and she has a different outfit on and John lewis does supply outfits so it shows that for everything there is an outfit at John lewis.Baby wear,Infant clothing,School clothing for children,Wedding dresses, casual teen clothes,business/work clothes it also has clothes for people who are really old this is portrayed through the characters being grandparents. It shows that John lewis can supply women for a lifetime and keep them happy, once a woman realises that John lewis is capable of being there with the things they need they may even begin to shop there for the whole family as John lewis is a shop that provides for the whole family. The fact that the clothes on the woman are worn throughout a lifetime means John lewis must be a trusted brand meaning it has gone through successfully statisfying customers over generations. As the woman is shown in various stages of age and she has clothes which seem to be from John lewis, this may be what shows that John lewis is a family supplying company.Clothes for all ages.I think the colour red which is constantly used on the woman from a very young age to an old age may try to communicate that John lewis brands believe you can still dress with style when you are old.Who says you have to dress up in old vintage granny clothes.Everything is constantly changing throughout the advert which could mean that John lewis will always be there with whatever you would need throughout life because you change and they dont.
The tagline at the end 'Our lifelong commitment to you' reflects on the woman in this advert as she has made a lifelong commitment to John lewis aswell. This means if you intend on making a commitment to John lewis they wont be the ones to let you down.

Media Representations
A womans life in this advert is shown as very busy. She would recieve very little time for herself and maybe when she can treats herself to John lewis clothing.Which she wears throughout the whole advert which is her whole life.It shows that clothes mean alot to women as in this advert the woman carefully selects her clothing from John lewis. The woman wears red coloured clothing throughout the advert which could mean that women are daring and take risks. She is also in every shot which means women mean alot and hold the family together, they provide for the family this is seen when she looks like a woman in her 50's and take a jug of lemondae outisde. She is providing for the family and guests around her. They are what guide other women into life this is seen from the part when her daughter is baking a cake and flour spills everywhere whilst she is standing next to her on the phone.Women are the domestic ones, this is seen in a more traditional society that women are likely to be the ones who stay at home and do the cooking and cleaning whilst men go out and work to provide. However this is not the case here as in earlier seconds we see the woman return tired in the evening from what would seem like work because of the casual clothing she has on, so it is showing the felxible tiring roles women aquire throughout different stages of life.

Media Audiences
The advert shows women they can look fabulous in John lewis clothing whilst doing any type of job as John lewis is the shop which is likely to have anything you want in any colour for all ages.It shows women the stages that every woman is likely to go through. The happiness they would feel on their wedding day,Whilst they are pregnant and etc.Because it shows everything so fast it would maybe make some female audiences realise how fast their life has gone by or that theya re midway through life and life has gone by so fast. This U&G would be information, the message that John lewis is trying to pass through this advert to female viewers of all ages who would be capable to go shop. Some people may even have identification with some of the characters featured in the advertisement as some women may be at the stage of getting married therefore they would identify themselevs with the young woman at her marriage stage in her wedding dress. That would create ideas for the woman to look in John lewis for a wedding ceremonial dress. That would offer excitment to the audience as everyone finds their wedding to be a very exciting moment in life.It may offer gratitude as people would who are familiar with John lewis are thankful for the shop to have been around for a great number of years.

New Technologies and Film Fiction

New Technologies and Film Fiction

The amazing high definition quality of blu-rays attracts audiences. You can see the movie in a more realistic view, in enriched colours.Rather than watching the DVD which consists of dark colours.
Audiences who enjoy watching movies alot with realistic features would enjoy Blurays as it brings the movie to life because of the enriched colours.
Bluray releases are benficial to producers as bluray has become quite common, people are movre interested in watching things in HD because most pieces of broadcast are now seen in HD quality, includin Sky Tv.
3D adds more entertainment to the movie the audience is likely to be drawn in and not distracted by the enviroment they are in because they enviroment would be the setting of the movie they are currently watching due to the amazing 3D features. It makes you feel part of the movie more.
Audieces would enjoy the experience of 3D because they feel they are within the movie and part of a movie. Some audiences would maybe even enjoy it for personal identity, having their faverouite actor or actress out in 3D beside them has the ability to satisfy and fascinate them. The producers decided to release the behind the scenes footage for Avatar to help people become familair with the charcters, as the characters are featured alot throughout this. They show the human and the Avatar at the same time to again make sure its not all too much for audiences, it makes it easier for them to get their heads round the appearance of the new characters. This was also released for anticipated fans, which brings us to U&G this particular one would be entertainment and personal identity.Audiences can be big fans of the directors work or the actors in the movie.
Viral marketing is getting audiences to promote and spread word about a product. The effect of viral marketing on audiences can be seen on the internet, sources of information given out by companies or producers rely heavily on audiences to be spread around the internet. The tribewired group would be attracted to viral marketing as they are the nerdy type, to be seen on devices with wifi the majority of the time, so they are likely to spread it or see it.Viral marketing was chosen to get people involved as activities like that gets other people who may not be fans to find out why it is so famous and liked by the majority of people

practise question

How and why do producers use synergy between products both secondary products and primary products of the same genre to attract audience?

Using synergy between products such as the trailer and poster makes it much easier for audiences to recongise the movie. As the same elements are used such as the taglines, the tagline for Argo the movie was fake the mission was real, this is seen continuously in the trailer and on the poster. We also constantly see things from the poster in the trailer such as 'from the director of the Town' this would then attract the same kinds of audeince for that particular movie.Creating a larger fanbase for the movie itself.

The colours used in the posters are negative colours, dull colours not as bright. They dont create a positive atmosphere, hinting the genre of this movie as Argo has a negative effect to the pictures,Lincoln is black and white, and Silver linings is the same with just a hint of colour which is the yellow. These make a mark as to what these colours represent genre-wise.As these movies all consist of drama and overcoming things, or fighting for something. This draws out the seriousness, the other thing that draws out the seriousness is the fact that all posters consist of the main actors faces. So there has been close ups used. These are usually used when the producer or director wants the audience to focus on the thing they have done a close up on.Their faces mean something,it could be the expression that creates a message for the audience. The facial expression is important as if they were smiling then no one would think it is a dramatic historical movie.

These posters and trailers try to create a realism effect to the audience, by repeating serious taglines and using lines such as 'based on a true story'.

Synergy between products makes a movie easier for audiences to identify, the tagline could be something that makes them identify each product.Names of actors are present at times on both posters and trailers as the actor would be the one drawing audiences and helping people recongise the movie, such as Argo Ben affelecks name is used continuously because he is very recongisable.

StarPower in my Case Study Movies

21JumpStreet

This movie uses various actors/actresses with starpower such as Channing tatum,Jonah hill,Icecube and Johnny depp although icecube and Johnny depp are not featured in the movie much this still would entice audiences to watch the movie.

Channing tatum plays one of the lead titles in this movie, we can see he has starpower as the last movie he was in called The Vow had a Budget of $30,000,000 (estimated) and made a Gross of  $125,014,030 (USA) (11 May 2012).That is a very large gross making it a very very successful movie.
Jonah hill plays one of the lead titles in this movie, in the movie Get him to the greek he played a lead title the budget for this movie is unknown but it Grossed $17,570,955 (USA) (6 June 2010).

This concludes that Channing tatum is the one with the most starpower here out of the two lead title actors.

500 Days of Summer

Zooey Deschanel is in this movie she plays one of the lead titles but she hasn't really played the lead title in other movies whereas she has been in a few movies that have grossed alot such as YesMan had a Budget of $70,000,000 (estimated) it made a Gross of $97,680,195 (USA) (27 March 2009).As she doesnt have alot of starpower she may have been used in this movie to make the focus more on the movie storyline or as it was a low budget movie and she wouldnt expect to be paid as much as a actress with starpower would want to be paid.

Paul

Simon pegg played the lead title in Hot Fuzz: Budget for the movie £8,000,000 (estimated) Gross made is $23,618,786 (USA) (20 July 2007). This shows that Simon Pegg has starpower, and this proves how succesful the movie is and why its usually mentioned on many of the Paul posters. He also has 6 Post productions for the upcoming years. This shows he is quite on demand.

StarPoweeeerrrrr

Effect of starpower on oscars and films.Actors and actreses with more starpower attract more audiences they have more fans, more fans mens more views for the movie making more profit. They can provide a guranteed income.
opening a film-holding the lead title on your own-playing the main character e.g.Jennifer lawerence  does that in Hunger games she is the lead actress.
actress and actors who have starpower make successful films. We know she is a good actress as she has won the oscar award -Critical acclaim.
Jennifer lawerence played the lead title in Hunger games which has a Budget of $78,000,000 and had a Gross of $407,999,255 (USA) (31 August 2012).That right there shows how powerful starpower can be.

Lindsay lohan is an example of someone who has no starpower, many of the movies she has played the lead title of make a loss of 10million rather than gaining.Lindsays movie Just my luck had a Budget of $28,000,000 (estimated) and made a Gross of $331,344 (25 August 2006)

Therefore starpower is a very important factor espeacially for directors and producers, they have to be careful on the actress/actor they choose to play the lead title in their movies.

  • Fast edits not to give too much of the action scenes in the movie away.
  • Ends with a humorous clip where they are seen trying to blend Paul in with the other humans. This defines the movie as a comedy dor the audience, a little bit of a taster as what kind of jokes the movie is likely to contain.
  • Last few intertitles is the release date february 2011, this also has the institution logos at the bottom.

Paul official website analysis

The official Paul website, has the colour theme of Red,White and black. The red colour is used to highlight important bits, such as the menu bar at the bottom and the movie title, and the words pegg and frost. Which refers to the main actors. The White background where the actors pictures are is used to make sure the focus is on the characters and text.
Synergy with the movie title Paul as it is written in the same font as the font on the poster, making it easy for audiences to recongise.Synergy as the same actors from the main poster have been used, they also have the same costumes on as they have on in the poster which again makes it more easy for audiences to recongise the website.Paul looks the same as he did on both posters, so he is easier to recongise as he is not something you would see everyday.

Simon pegg and Nick frost are positioned so they are the first things you see, this is good because then the audience will recongise who they are and what movie this is.They can get a rough idea of what the movie will be like because they have directed and starred in movies before that have been quite big.We have a quote from a magazine called Empire, a big movie empire whos opinion would definatly count for something for some audiences. The quote is a very positive one.Synergy detected again as on the poster it said 'from the producers of hotfuzz' it also says it here on the website again to attract more numbers of audiences as hotfuzz may have been a very successful movie.

The menu at bottom has stills from the movie and trailer so it again makes it easier to recongise what movie this may be and has an unusual setting as most websites dont have images for the menu.

Paul website analysis

The Paul website is hard to recongise as there isnt really anything there that clearly confirms for you that this is abot the movie Paul up until you take a little bit of time looking carefully at the surroundings,a dvd and blu ray box cover is on the right side of the page. The pictures of the dvd and blu ray is the picture used on the poster with all three main characters. There is no use of colour on the site except for plain white/silver.The name of the movie is on the left hand side in grey which doesnt make it stand out much. That is what makes it harder to spot. That wasn't one of the first things i spotted.
The instution is clearly shown as Universal Studios Entertainment.
Alot of extra videos such as behind the scenes with interviews from the actors to get their views on the movie and how some scenes were completed. We also have a video promoting the dvd and blu ray, interview with the actors.Scrolling down we have the chance to recieve more information about what the blu ray and dvd consist of.It seems as though the main purpose of this site was to promote and sell the dvd and blu ray.

Website analysis 21Jump Street

The 21 Jump Street website has Sony everywhere which lets us know that sony pictures was one of the main production companies for this movie. The site is a Sonypictures website aswell. We have various links on the page that let you connect with Sony pictures to let fans know when and what kind of movies they will be releasing.

The maine image for 21Jump Street has a large image spread across,it is a still of a scene where they are walking out the limos and making an entrance to the prom.So we recongise theme easily as they are wearing the white suits they have on in the poster for the movie. The movie title name is the same font and colour as it is on the teaser poster and the normal poster, which shows synergy and the same costume and use of font, font colour makes it more easier for audiences to identify the movie. There is also use of the same tagline 'The only thing getting blown tonight is their cover'.This is seen on the blu ray cover and the poster.

We have the right corner selling the movie in different forms,Blu-ray,DVD,Itunes and Ultra violet. Which seems to be something new as it is promoted again under the title. It gives the audience simpler ways of purchasing the movie, instead of having a DVD they can download it to watch it anywhere.Things that you are able to click on that lead you to another webpage seem to be a red rectangle with white writing which makes them easy to identify which saves users from hovering the mouse on bits of the page to see what is accessable.

There is also a picture of the Blu ray which would probably make it easier for people to spot in a shop if they would rather not buy online.as we scroll further down we see exclusive interviews, theres also a game to play and further down it tells us the speacial features that you get on the blu ray or dvd.It contains things people would want to watch if they really find the movie entertaining or for personal identity, they could enjoy the directors work therefore they would enjoy the commentary which is featured on the dvd.

A few stills from the movie and then pictures of 4 other movies which have been produced by Sonypictures and are alot like the movie 21 jump street.

21 Jump Street intertexuality and U&G

The movie 21Jump Street has been described as The Fast and Furious,Super bad and Never been kissed. This is because it contains these elements of comedy, action and some deep meaningful moments not only to do with love but with bonds of friendship.Ice Cube, nails the stereotypical angry black police captain.

When people first heard about a 21Jump Street movie in the process of making, alot of fans assumed it would be a remake of the TV series but instead they have created something that has nothing to do with the original TV series. It has been said to be one of the best comedies of the year.

The film opens with a scene in which we see Jonah Hill with a slim shady look, a typical un popular looking kid with braces. We see him fail to invite the girl of his dreams to the prom. This is very similar to Never been kissed whereas in that she has been successfully invited by a popular kid but her appearance is very similar to Jonah's here. This helps audiences identitfy what kind of person the character is in the movie.People can already begin to make links with what could happen as the audience already knows this is a story of these two going back to highschool undercover. The slim shady look creates intertexuality with the famous rapper Eminem, it creates it to be more humourous as Eminem is a very famous rapper amongst a wide range of audiences, many races and many ages.

Jonah Hill becomes more of a popular kid as well as Drew barrymore in Never been kissed. This is a link of intertexuality. You can guess what happens he begins to get dragged in by the popular kids and feels as though he is living his High school life now as he never had much of a great one when it was actually his turn.

This movie would attract people who have enjoyed movies such as Never been kissed,The Fast and Furious,Super bad. The age range would be older teens and young adults.Tribewired people.Individuals who love action and comedy. This may attract a a little percentage of rugged traditionalists as this movie does consist of fast paced car chases and fight scenes but it has a higher level of immaturity which may not fit their catergory.

Paul Trailer Analysis

Establishing
  • Begins with a Universal intertitle
  • Then the working title intertitle
  • synergy detected as these two production companies are seen on the poster of the mvie
  • Non diagetic sound, an old country song that sounds like an American song,Sets the scene.
  • Long shot of caravan driving by along the road.
  • Close up of the sign that says Extraterrestrial Highway and the caravan drives past, shows there is a link between the two. The sign must mean something the way it would in a horror movie when a car drives past and a close up of a sign saying 'dead end' would come up.
  • Creates mystery.
  • Lady at the bar confirms for us the caravan is theirs by saying 'Your going on a road trip huh'
  • Bar is full of props related to extraterrestrials including alien head mugs, trying to hint out the obvious of this being an Alien related movie.
  • Litlle bit of diagetic sound
  • Non diagetic throughout
  • Talking about the main reason they are here'tour of Americas most famous UFO hotspots'
  • Intertitle-'There were many sights they planned to see'

  • Paul is wearing the same outfit as the one he has on in the posters.
  • Non diagetic sound resumes but it is different as it has a faster beat to it and is no longer country music.
  • Plot unravels further as Paul begins to say 'i really need your help this is a matter of life and death'
  • mroe characters are introduced, the agents trying to catch Paul, they seem to be what he is running from.We know they are dangerous as they have weapons.
  • They look similar to 'Men in Black' agents as they are dressed in suits with sunglasses hunting for Aliens.
  • Paul is wanted and Simon and Nick try to protect him and get him home safely.
  • Enticing more audiences who enjoyed the movie superbad by having an intertitle that says 'from the directors of superbad'.

Its funny because thats how they should be eaten...Dead.

Paul poster analysis

The tagline 'Whos up for a close encounter?' this is inviting people who are interested in Aliens and Sci fi movies to come and watch this movie. To get a real feel of what the outer space species are like.Enticing them to come and watch the movie. A close encounter is an event in which a person witnesses an unidentified flying object. This links with the movie as it is about an Alien, people familiar with Aliens ad UFO'S are likely to understand the wording as 'close encounter' is speacially used for things like that.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a 1977 science fiction-drama written and directed by Steven Spielberg ''After an encounter with UFOs, a line worker feels undeniably drawn to an isolated area in the wilderness where something spectacular is about to happen.''

The spotlight colour surrounding them is not yellow or white as that is the colour a helicopter would have as a searchlight, the colour purple creates more of a mystery and supports the idea of this being a close encounter with a UFO. Purple is not a colour that a helicopter searchlight would be.The unusual purple spotlight also highlights the main characters.Purple unusual spotlight shows it is coming from the sky as characters are looking upwards towards something in the sky,the two human characters are in shock and confused,Paul is smiling the tagline ties in with Paul being 'the close encounter' as he is smiling at the thing above them it shows he is familiar with it.So it must be one of his kind.

Paul is present again from the teaser poster, creates synergy.Same character and clothes.People almost recongise the poster as two new characters are present.Only crazy fans of Nick frost and Simon pegg would recongise the movie.Hard for new audiences.New layout,Black whereas teaser poster is bright yellow.Pauls casual outfit reassures audiences that this movie would be a comedy as what Alien would wear casual clothes and stand so close comfortably next to two adult humans. We pick up a bit of comedy from the fact that Paul is holding a milkshake or a drink that you can purchase from shops like Mcdonalds, this shows he has an adventure and gets around during the time hes here.

This is a movie for Teens over 16 and young adults, mostly male as the two main characters are dressed as young adults who have just finished their education and probably live together. They look like 'nerds' and 'gamers' this can be picked up from the shirts and the samurai sword on one of their backs.Who would carry a samurai sword around unless they are a crazed fan of the object.

The main movie title is written in a different font compared to the teaser poster when most movie posters keep the writing the same on all posters. This font is quite unique as it also consists of a little Alien head on the A.The title and actor names are in white and similar font. The line below the title which is in orange is what will help people recongise the movie, and help Simon pegg and Nick frost fans to identitfy this as another one of their comedy movies.

The producer companies are very little, barely visible but one is on the left and the other is on the right. It will be released on valentines day a memorable date, a little bit of relevance to the date of valentines day as there is some romance in there but not as much that would make it suitable to be relased on valentines day.It would have had a hard time competeing with more romantic movies released that day.

A website link is present at the bottom for people who are curious to go and discover more information about the movie.www.paulthemovie.co.uk

Paul intertexuality and U&G

The movie Paul has intertexuality to it as the actual character who is called Paul has the appearance of a typically described Alien. Most Aliens look like that in other movies and the shape of his head and body is how some people who believe they have encountered aliens would describe them to look.So it creates familiarity for audiences it also makes it easier for them to recongise Paul as almost normal. This is because this is what Aliens are described as normally.
Personal Identity-Males would want to watch this movie as Paul is a care free, reckless friend.Something                 most young adults and teens want in friends or are like that themselves.
Entertainment-The movie is a comedy, people who have previously watched movies that consist of Simon pegg and Nick frost are likely to watch this if they enjoyed movies such as Shaun of the Dead.
Social-groups of friends may enjoy Simon pegg and Nick frost movies.

Pauls appearance is something that you can pick out alot of intertexuality from as it is how Aliens are usually described and how a large amound of the population would expect them to look. They look the way Paul does in various movies that consist of Alien encounters. One famous Alien movie that i think they have alot of intertexuality with is E.T. This is because they look a little similar in appearance and the basic storyline is the same.Discovering an Alien who has landed on earth and the main charcter helps keep it safe from being discovered by the government also helping it return safely home.E.T is dressed as a ghost on halloween in order for the main character to sneak him out of the house whereas Paul dresses up as a cowboy to avoid being spotted by the agents who are after him so the two main characters can get him out from their current location. There is also a reference to the movie predator when Paul manages to go invisible.

Sigourney weaver creates intertexuality with this movie as she is the main actress of one of the very famous sci fi franchises which started off with the movie Alien, following on with Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien resurrection. Her being in this movie makes it abit more funny to show how they have got her to go from serious alien action movie to comedy alien action movie. Her being a part of the movie will attract her fans and create a larger audience for the movie itself which will make a large profit for them. But the movie was not that succesful.
